A book of sixty-four figures, and a later numerical practice that turns two ordinary numbers into a checkable change of form.
Where it comes from
The Zhouyi, usually called the I Ching in English, is a layered ancient Chinese text built from sixty-four hexagrams: six stacked broken or unbroken lines. Its earliest strata belong to the Zhou period; the familiar philosophical commentaries were added and reworked over centuries. It is not one book with one author or one settled method of use.
Mei Hua Yi Shu, Plum Blossom Numerology, is a later image-and-number practice associated in tradition with the Northern Song thinker Shao Yong. Its most transparent classroom form starts from two numbers. The first becomes the upper trigram, the second the lower; their sum fixes one moving line. The arithmetic is public, so another reader can reproduce every stage of the cast.
That transparency is the point here. Ling AI does not pretend to hear an omen in a server clock. You supply the two numbers, the app records them, and the model receives the already-computed primary, mutual, and changed hexagrams as context to reflect on—not as a license to invent facts.
The numbers do not decide your future. They give the question a fixed shape, so you can notice what changes when you look at it from another side.
How a reading is built
- 01Two numbers
Choose a pair that genuinely belongs to the question: a page and line, a receipt total and item count, or another concrete pair. The first number is divided by eight for the upper trigram; the second is divided by eight for the lower. A remainder of zero is read as eight.
- 02The moving line
Add the original two numbers and divide by six. The remainder selects one line, counted from the bottom; zero is read as six. That line changes from yin to yang or yang to yin, producing the changed hexagram. This app uses the original numbers, not reduced remainders, and records that choice.
- 03Primary, mutual, changed
The primary hexagram is the immediate form. The mutual hexagram is mechanically derived from its inner four lines, giving an interior structure. The changed hexagram is what appears when the selected line turns. These are calculations, not three separate random draws.
- 04Body and function
When the moving line is in the lower trigram, the lower is the body and the upper is the function; when it is in the upper trigram, the roles reverse. The five-phase relation between them is a traditional way of naming support, expenditure, constraint, or sameness. It is a language for proportion, not a verdict.
What it will not tell you
- A repeatable calculation does not make an interpretation certain. No hexagram establishes events, dates, illnesses, money, or another person's motives.
- Different modern teaching streams differ on details such as whether to use original numbers or remainders for the moving line. This method states its choice before the cast and does not change it after seeing the result.
